Creating a strategy across 20 business units
GreenOrder worked with Masco, a leading manufacturer of home improvement and building products, to create a comprehensive strategy for a decentralized organization.
MASCO'S Challenge Masco retained GreenOrder to:
- Develop a cohesive sustainability strategy that stems from the organization's corporate leadership but is implemented by and supported throughout the business units
- Craft an implementation plan to launch the sustainability strategy and cascade it throughout the organization
- Create tools and processes to support product innovation, market intelligence, and routine operations
- Devise a go-to-market strategy and assess whether an internal green brand is appropriate
GreenOrder's Approach Key components of GreenOrder's work included:
- In-depth interviews and employee survey to gauge the attitudes of Masco's staff towards sustainability
- Competitive analysis by product platform, resulting in recommendations for prioritization of green product development specific to each product platform
- Cross-function and cross-business unit workshops to inform strategy development
- Priority and goal right-sizing and action prioritization by core functional area
- In-depth scenario analysis of several different green branding paths and development of green messaging guidelines
- Implementation playbook to translate enterprise-level strategy to business units
- Performance framework in the form of a pan-Masco scorecard for green products
Results Through our work, Masco:
- Launched its first enterprise-wide strategy and established pathways for collaboration across business units
- Developed its first set of environmental goals, with criteria and immediate targets for green product sales
- Created the position of VP of Sustainability
